Congratulations Jay Xu!

We want to extend heartfelt congratulations to our dear friend Jay Xu on his new position at the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. Jay is leaving his position as the Chairman of the Department of Asian Art at the Art Institute of Chicago to become the Director of the famed Asian Art Museum of San Francisco. We wish all the best to Jay and his family. Despite the Xu family's move to San Francisco, we (Randy, Bev & Zen Lynch), plan to continue our fun and engaging Asia trips together in the future!

The Importance of Guanxi

"Guanxi" is probably one of my favorite Chinese words, and to the Chinese, its meaning is one of great importance. I first learned of guanxi many years ago while working at Korean Air. In the course of launching and growing Kipling & Clark, I’ve continued to learn just how critical guanxi is.

Most non-Chinese speakers tend to define guanxi as “connections that an individual can make with the people surrounding him/her.” However, I don’t feel that the word “connections,” sufficiently explains the importance of this central concept in Chinese society.

Guanxi is the grand effect and dynamic found in one’s personal networking influences. In a country where symbolism is paramount, poor mannerism and protocol will make negotiation difficult. So whether traveling abroad or meeting with clients/colleagues, always keep in mind - guanxi, guanxi!

Quick Facts about Vietnam

The United States is the world's largest importer of Vietnamese goods.

Vietnam is the largest exporter of cashews in the world.

Buddhism, Christianity, Taoism and Confucianism, are the four great religions and philosophies that have shaped the spiritual life of the Vietnamese people.
